Question: Do cats and dogs have different blood types like humans?

Answer: Yes, they do. Cats have 3 different blood types: A, B, and AB. Dogs have 12 different blood types using a different scale: DEA (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen). Giving a dog or cat the wrong blood type causes a similar reaction as giving a human the wrong blood type. An acute hemolytic transfusion reaction is the most feared transfusion reaction, because the effect can be rapid, irreversible and fatal.
